ALDEA Language Training
Learn a language, speak a culture.
*ALL CLASSES ARE 90 MINUTE SESSIONS.
RECORDED CLASSES MAY AT TIMES BE SHORTER THAN LIVE.
This Spanish class is more relaxed and slightly less structured than previous years, if you have taken levels 1 or 2. This is an intentional effort to put students at greater ease and make them comfortable practicing their language skills in front of others. While grammar lessons and extensive vocabulary will continue using the Ven Conmigo online textbook, additional emphasis will be on speaking, listening, and reading comprehension. At this level of study, students must be willing to talk and make some mistakes in order to feel comfortable with the language and become proficient. Each student will set high goals for individual improvement in pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and fluency in speaking and writing. Spanish Level 3 students will read El ojo de agua, a comic mystery which introduces new vocabulary and follows the adventures of young people in Costa Rica.

WORLD RELIGIONS
This course will explore five of the world’s most prominent non-Christian religions (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, animistic beliefs and Judaism) with the objective of discovering ways and means by which adherents of these religions can be loved by adherents to Christianity. We will talk about situations to which Christians can and should respond with full awareness and integrity - and most importantly, understanding and love. Emphasis will be placed on listening to these religions and to their followers so that genuine communication and understanding can occur. Attention will be given to the history, development, teachings, and present status of these religions (both in the United States and their countries of origin) as well as their sacred scriptures. One way this will be accomplished is through interviewing an adherent to one of the religions we are studying and very possibly visiting their place of worship. Overall, if one believes in the central issue of the eternal truth of Jesus, one must take into account his or her worldview and religious frame of reference.

SPANISH LEVEL 4 (Literature and Grammar Enhancement)
(Spanish 3 with Profa Fann a non-negotiable prerequisite)
This fourth year Spanish class will actually meet WITH the Spanish 3 students - it is very relaxed in order to put students at greater ease and make them comfortable practicing their speaking and translation skills. Each student will set high goals for individual improvement in the areas of pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and fluency in speaking and writing. Every third week you will be the "guest tutor" for the Spanish 3 class and will prepare lessons for that session. Otherwise, you will be studying with them and learning how to reproduce the language - it may sound like a repeat, but the preparation you do outside of class is very in depth. We will be reading El ojo de agua: An adventure in Costa Rica which involves comprehension and vocabulary testing; we will also be reading and translating Maria by Jorge Isaacs.
